ESPN指出，鄧肯（Tim Duncan）確定留隊，加上阿爾德里奇（LaMarcus Aldridge）投效，馬刺對即將38歲的吉諾比利（Manu Ginobili）再戰一年更加樂觀。
目前馬刺的工作重點是提升板凳深度，除了要簽自由球員韋斯特（David West），留下GDP之一的吉諾比利也非常重要。
上賽季吉諾比利狀態下滑明顯，他每100回合失誤超過5次，季後賽的投籃命中率甚至低到34.9%，季後賽生涯新低。首輪輸給快艇後，他已經流露退休的意向。
據悉，吉諾比利將在阿根廷報紙透露未來動向。
馬刺總教練波波維奇（Gregg Popovich）沒有放棄吉諾比利的意思，認為他依然是球隊重要的奪冠拼圖，希望他能回來為球隊打第14個賽季。
之前吉諾比利曾表示，鄧肯的決定將會影響他是否會回來，現鄧肯已經宣佈繼續打下去，無疑這是個極好的信號。
自由球員市場開放後，馬刺先是成功續約李納德（Kawhi Leonard）和丹尼-格林（Danny Green），加上與阿爾德里奇簽下4年頂薪合約後，馬刺爭冠信心劇增，他們甚至以此來「引誘」吉諾比利歸隊。
